Clementines
Overview
Grown in Italy, Spain, Morocco and South Africa, clementines are a sweet seedless fruit similar to tangerines. They are oblate, small citrus fruits that are the hesperidium of a variety of mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata). The exterior is a deep orange color with a smooth, glossy appearance.
Clementines separate easily into eight to fourteen juicy segments. They are very easy to peel, like a tangerine, but are almost always seedless. They can be used in recipes wherever other citrus fruits are used, for zest and sweetening. This fiber filled fruit is nutritionally rich with vitamins A and C, and is a tasty 35 calorie snack. Naturally sweet, kids love them.
Spanish clementines are available from mid-October through February. They reach their peak of flavor from November through January. Colorful enough to grace a Thanksgiving fruit bowl, they make great Christmas gifts, packed in little crates, it is sometimes referred to as "Christmas Oranges".
